From: genewardsmith (2011-01-04) Subject: Archytas12 hobbit, sync beating In order to test the hypothesis that synchronized tetrad beating could ameliorate tuning error, I present this sync version of the archytas12 hobbit scale Chris used recently. If Chris or anyone else wanted to compare a piece using plenty of otonal tetrads in this tuning and the other one, it might be interesting. ! archytas12sync.scl Archytas[12] (64/63) hobbit, sync beating ! 3+x, 5+x, 7+x, x smaller root of 2x^3 + 19x^2 + 60x - 1 12 ! 96.45889 222.99262 319.45150 392.04481 488.50369 615.03742 711.49631 807.95519 934.48892 977.00738 1103.54111 1200.00000 ! ! ! prearchytas12.scl ! Why present a scale to test a tetrad? -Carl

You said a synchronized tetrad could ameliorate tuning error. One doesn't need music to test that, just tetrads. In fact music makes it much harder to test. -Carl

From: Chris Vaisvil (2011-01-04) Subject: Re: [tuning] Archytas12 hobbit, sync beating I can run the tuning on an existing piece no problem. This afternoon I should get to it. So sorry to put claims in your mouth, but my objection about scales/music vs. chords stands. -Carl
From: Chris Vaisvil (2011-01-05) Subject: Re: [tuning] Archytas12 hobbit, sync beating Ok, I see you want tetrads - so I need to go back and compose another piece. Nonetheless, here are the two versions of the Hobvbit tuning using the wind version of the original Hobbit improvisation piece I wrote. http://micro.soonlabel.com/hobbit_scales/daily20101231-archytas-hobbit.mp3 http://micro.soonlabel.com/hobbit_scales/daily20101231-archytas-hobbit-in-sync.mp3 Chris On Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 2:19 AM, genewardsmith <[email protected]>wrote: > > > In order to test the hypothesis that synchronized tetrad beating could > ameliorate tuning error, I present this sync version of the archytas12 > hobbit scale Chris used recently. This was already very interesting; the two versions sounded more unalike that I expected. I wouldn't call the effect amelioration; rather, the sync beating seems to call attention to the harmony.
From: Jacques Dudon (2011-01-06) Subject: Re: Archytas12 hobbit, sync beating It depends of the passages ; they are very different. Some of the diatonic passages I prefer in the sync version, that has more contrasts, but on the whole piece I find the original more harmonized. Would not some intermediary level of sync beating be possible ? - - - - - - - Jacques PS : what's a hobbit tuning ? sounds nice !
